Overview:Museums and the Community in West Africa - This work draws on the practical experience of the West African Museums Programme in encouraging the establishment of museums which are responsive to local needs and which can contribute in vital ways to the growth and development of the community. The contributors argue that in the preservation of the cultural heritage of the community, the focal responsibility falls rather on the local museums than on the centrally-controlled national museums. They suggest that the running of local museums must harmonize with the national museums.
